While making lunch on Saturday afternoon my friend Jesse and my daughter Hannah were looking out our kitchen window at all the leaves and were talking about going outside after lunch to play in those leaves. My neighbor had her family over which includes a small Pomeranian. They were all outside on my neighbors porch with the pomeranian wandering right around the porch. Just as Hannah comments on the "puppy" being outside, a Pit Bull comes out of no where and attacks the Pomeranian. My neighbors were yelling and trying to get the pit bull off their dog for a few minutes. Finally the owner of the Pit bull comes walking over and just as the pit bull goes to lunge at the poor Pomeranian his owner was able to distract him and get him away from every one.
I left Jesse and Hannah in the house, to check to make sure every one was ok. My neighbors think the Pomeranian is ok. They weren't sure what they should do next. I suggested calling the cops to let them know the pit bull shouldn't be trusted. My neighbors told me not to call the cops as they thought the pit bulls owner is part of a gang. I told them don't worry I'm not afraid to contact the police.
So I went back to my apartment to call the police. It took me a few minutes to find the correct non- emergency number. As I was on the phone with them I watched the owner of the pit bull and his friends with the Pit bull. As i was on the phone with the dispatcher the "gang memeber" pit bull owner proceeds to kick the dog as its just sitting there doing nothing!!
I know there is big debates as to what should be done with this kind of breed of dog. Whether to have more strict laws about insurance and if allowing them in the city. Nov I haven't had much of an opinion about this until the last year or so. So far in my experience I have seen a total of three pit bulls attack other smaller dogs. Two of the three I have known personally and they were the nicest most loving dogs. They acted just as my moms chocolate lab does towards all people and even other dogs. With this happening this weekend in front of my eyes and with the two year old in the paper that was attacked by a pit bull. I truely believe the pit bull breed shouldn't be in family oriented areas nor with young children in the house. I understand all dogs can snap at some point but Pit bulls are and have been breed for guard dogs and hunting.
They are more likely to snap than most other breeds. I also read some where(not sure exactly where but it had to have been a newspaper as that usually where i read things) that pit bulls are also more likely used in gangs for retaluation(sorry on the spelling) and fighting. Which if that is true I now have to be extremely cautious any time i leave or come home, not knowing if that dog is roaming my neighborhood looking to attack some thing. I dont think any family should have to be that cautious. Kids love to play outside and run around. They shouldnt have to live in fear.
Oh to finish the story the owner of the pit bull had left before the police had come, but once the police had come and gone my neighbor came over to say thanks for calling them. My neighbor and her family were afraid to call the cops due to the pit bulls owners possibly being gang memembers and that they would cause problems for her since shes older and living on her own. We both concluded that we would look out for each other in that aspect. I dont know if the cops know who owns the pit bull but i know if i see it or its owners around here anymore i will immediatly call the police and my land lord will be notified about the situation.
Good for you! It's a good thing you guys weren't out in the yard playing when this happened.
